From Greg, an SI non-member who uses SGI equipment:

I'm just checking out Silicon Investor for now, and so I can't post stuff. I couldn't resist sending a reply to your note on Silicon Graphics, however. I hope this isn't an intrusion (in fact, feel free to post this note there if you feel it contributes anything).

SGI seems positioned to do a lot better in the near term, in my opinion. Their new NT-oriented machines provide hot performance due to the fast subsystems they have developed over many years. (The very fast bus, in particular, addresses a key bottleneck for modern systems that tend to be memory-bound.) From the interest I see in mid-to-high end users, I think this machine may do very well. There are a lot of former SGI fans with a fondness for the company and it's products but who are forced into other niches.

Their increasing support for LINUX, with their very fast graphics, open a little-tapped fast growing market segment. In fact, I believe there will be more news on this front in the near term. The graphics performance they can deliver is another world from that of voodoo and ATI and visualization remains an important market. Finally, the recent changes re. Alias (their graphics software house) suggests that even they may experience a Renaissance for their top-end software tools, as they become available (i.e. affordable) to a larger class of users. I am planning to buy in myself, perhaps tomorrow.
