Asteroid is the working conceptual conjecture but it doesn't tell you what the cause of the mineralization was. And asteroid would have caused a crater that would have filled with volcanic and sediment regimes. I have had this argument with magmatists before and can blast holes easily in their childish theories. The first proposal for felsic VMS in Sudbury was in 1948. Then some PhD theses in 1964 proposed the sedimentary theory once again. The magmatists cling to their non- conclusive isotopic ratios that prove nothing towards depostion type. Sulphide flow into deposits is hard to imagine (its too turgid a melt to flow far.. try fire assaying 100% sulfides and you will see) and widely discounted by others as too turgid a method of formation. With fractionation of cumulate masses is also difficult to say why the orebodies are so localized at the margin of embayments in basin structures. Why the co-incidence? The magmatic theory is a swiss cheese with all kinds of trailing strings and unexplained factors. It is necessary to embrace it as a religion first and leave all kinds of intrusive dykes cutting the norite as "problems". First religious implausibility is the Norite "intrusion" into the "plane of weakness" around the basin edge. The grand co-incidence! Why the basin edge? Why not behave as other intrusions do and move everything our of the way and have apophyses in every which way? Why so conformable and well behaved like a flow. Why not? Because then it is not an intrusion! Aha! ..Ex Sedimentare Cathedra ! Heretic! "Intrusions must find their nickel! The sedimentarian: "And why always on a gneiss it deposits its ore, kind sir?" .. "Begone!" King Magma commands! "No sedimentary nickel! Base sediment is for other, less noble minerals!"
