British Telecommunications Plans
Major Push to Offer Multimedia

LONDON -- British Telecommunications PLC plans to spend an additional 5 billion pounds ($8.19 billion) over five years to offer multimedia services to U.K. homes and businesses.

Separately, BT said its new high-speed pan-European phone system, which links the networks of its partners in seven countries, would be operational by the end of March. But BT faces plenty of competition from other players with similar plans, including MCI WorldCom Inc., Cable & Wireless PLC and the Dutch-American team of Royal KPN NV and Qwest Communications International Inc.

In Britain, BT will roll out its new core network, dubbed BeTaNet, to carry voice, data, video and Internet services, mainly for corporate customers. BT expects to later spend millions more to extend the network to residential customers and compete with cable-TV companies. BT had already set plans to spend 1.37 billion pounds toward the new U.K. network; it will now spend an additional 5 billion pounds.
