<<Owens to consider mine tax cut

Governor says he'll look at severance levy

By Richard Williamson
News Staff Writer
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gov. Bill Owens said Wednesday that he is willing to consider Colorado mining companies' plea for a one-third reduction in severance taxes on coal and metals produced in the state.

After a speech at the Colorado Mining Association's annual meeting in Denver, Owens said his package of tax cuts, including a proposed permanent 5 percent income tax reduction, could be adjusted to include a tax break for the financially distressed mining industry.(cont.)

<<Owens told the mining executives that one of their problems is public perception of what their companies do. The governor suggested that the industry follow the example of farmers, whose business of producing food is respected, though often unprofitable.

"Simply put, not enough people understand why your industry is vital to our future," he said.>>

The prior Democrat Gov. found no need for mining or the mining industry.
