Dr S - ..Microsoft would be interested in buying Amazon, when they can undercut them...

why, by any stretch of the imagination, would msft care less about scamazon? that's the stupidest thing i've heard yet, w/all due respect of course. msft has the fattest margins a company can have -- nothwithstanding that they may not be legal. msft has a very predictable business, a fact not lost on the lemming analysts. msft doesn't care about scamazon's rise to $20bln, so do get lulled into that.

>> If Microsoft buys Egghead that would seem to be devastating to Amazon, <<
I don't think Msft would buy Egghead. Paul Allen Msft co-founder used to be Eggs largest shareholder. It was a bad investment then, and the lousy margins make it a bad investment now.
I take that back. Bezos has lousy margins, but It's stock price suggests that might change. Probably by Forrester Research 2003/2005.

I was looking for Turbotax state at Amzn lately and was surprised at the lack of software on Amzns site, and more importantly, there wasnt even any infrastructure to support software.

For example, the tab for "dept" - books, gifts, video, CD. No software... at least they could say books&software if they arent ready to unveil a software dept. Also, when I found turbotax, they didnt even stock turbotax state. I found this to be atypical of amzn management because tax season is a blowout for software and Im sure they know that + the beauty of software is you only have to stock a few titles to get the windfall (Turbotax, quicken, taxcut and a few others). So maybe the egghead rumor has some credibility, if they were to pick up egghead they certainly would not be adding software to their existing site.
