Tony Thornley>
Qualcomm's (QCOM) chief financial officer, Tony Thornley, said the
code-division multiple access wireless market has a "very bright future"
that will benefit his company. Qualcomm develops CDMA technology,
including phones and chips, for the cellular wireless industry. Growth in
Japan, Thornley said, should jump from 300,000 subscribers in 1998 to
3 million in 1999. The market for CDMA technology is expected to be
hot, but analysts have questioned whether Qualcomm's handset business
can compete with giants like Motorola (MOT) and Nokia (NOK.A).
With a current shortage of handsets, "we don't see the competition as a
problem," Thornley told an audience at the NationsBanc
Montgomery Securities tech conference. "But certainly in the future
we see that as a major factor."

Hi Maurice--sis!boom!bah! That qualify?
Yesterday God decided that I should circle airports for a few thousand hours as a result of which the Q Annual Report is now encoded in my DNA. Excellent reading actually; recommend it to all even if it is singing to the choir. Drs. Jacobs and Viterbi appeared to be fully present when the IQ thingies were handed out. I still can't figure out how they had the cajones to push the little CDMA train up the hill when nobody believed; don't give a flip if they both become trillionaires. They took the risk and they deserve the reward. Period, end of sermon.
Now, not so buried in the report is the date of mid-April 1999. No, this is not a reminder to grab your ankles and file your 1040's, but rather that in some god-forsaken town in east jesus Texas, the Mighty Q is squaring off with the Evil Empire. Is this date set in stone? Or is this just gonna be one of those infinite continuance deals? All Tassled Loafers: respond s'il vous plait. SM
