Advanced Micro says could incur oper loss in Q1

biz.yahoo.com

SUNNYVALE, Calif, Feb 4 (Reuters) - Chip maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. said on Thursday that based on a re-assessment of competitive business conditions, it could incur an operating loss in its current fiscal first quarter.

AMD shares tumbled earlier before they were halted from trading on the New York Stock Exchange, pending news. The stock fell amid speculation the company would have difficulty meeting 1999 first quarter earnings estimates due to increasingly tough pricing competition against its major rival Intel Corp (Nasdaq:INTC - news).

Per Briefing.com:

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) 18 15 1/16 -2: --UPDATE-- chip maker is warning that it could post an operating loss in Q1 and does not see any benefit from K6 production until the latter half of 1999;

Gross margins feeling pinch from inability to raise average chip prices.

According to First Call, AMD was projected to earn $0.13 in Q1.

So, there is at least $0.13 difference for Q1, and $0.65 lower for the FY based on new FY 1999 estimate of $0.17.

More downgrades and deeper earning cuts to come on Friday. AMD will go to low teens soon.

Why is everyone blaming AMD and Jerry Sanders? Did AMD expect a Celeron 433 in March? Intel just announced the Celeron 400 a few weeks ago.

AMD has been too successful gaining market share, and they have driven Intel to take drastic steps. The only hope is that K7 comes out quickly, and at high MHz. Then AMD can seriously hurt the evil empire.

Re: "Anybody wanna bet it opens at around 16 in the morning? I oughta email Sander's a thank you note for announcing this during trading hours. That BASTARD, it coulda waited an hour."

I hate to speak ill of Jerry but frankly what did you expect from this guy? The AMD shareholder has never been a factor in any decision he has ever made. How many times do shareholders have to have their face rubbed in it to get the picture? You're right, it could've waited a hour but that would require consideration for people like you. Why would Jerry ever give it a first much less a second thought?

Re:Anybody wanna bet it opens at around 16 in the morning?

MickeyB,

Wanna bet they can't even open in the morning because of an imbalance. If it opens at 16 I for one will be quite surprised. I would be even more surprised if they manage to close at 16.

Any guesses on what tomorrows close will be? I'd say 13 if were lucky. I hope someone can make me eat those words after trading closes tomorrow.
