Hi Jim, Just read your post. I agree this general topic should be developed , I have more questions than answers.:) You may be able to help us, perhaps others may help as well. You may well be right. In CPQ's case, do we really know if this was a short term push into the channel to pump the quarter or if it is a result of unintended back up or a combination of both? Most likely AMD's troubles may be impacting on CPQ's sales. From the VAR point of view, CPQ did not make friends with the VAR's by shifting their efforts to the direct market. There is sufficient evidence to suggest that VAR's are less enthusiastic about their current position with CPQ. It would seem that this has not helped CPQ. Certainly the VAR's have not fared well with this shift. Based on what you have been able to review do you see CPQ in a better position today than in the comparable last year 4th Quarter? On a running year do you see CPQ in a better position? How well did they address the old problems? What problems are new for CPQ? You could address some of this inquiry to IBM similarly if you will. With regard to IBM what has their recent quarters looked like in terms of their normal in channel position? How much business percentagewise of IBM's overall business is channel sensitive? Has that increased or decreased? What portions of IBM's business been shifted away from channel partners? How has their direct business fared? Going forward, how difficult is their situation giving their present position? If you sat in the seat of each of these players, how would you address their problems? Their opportunities? Assuming that there is no doubt that they are firmly convinced that shifting from the channel to a more direct sell through is the way to go,if you were Dell what would you do differently do deal with the increased "me too" competition? Would you still look to grow Dell's business organically? If you were Dell and would consider looking outside the organization, what acquisition and or partnership could you envision as synergistic to Dell? What areas other than the server, storage business do you see Dell looking to? What business are Dell's competitors in, that currently Dell is not and should be in? Of those (assuming you see something there) which one area would you look into first? Any thoughts from you and or anyone else, that will enable us to sort through this, would be helpful and as usual, much appreciated. Regards, QT
