No, but AMD sure thought they could. Remember how they continually boasted about how they would beat Intel on price?

In your "litany", Jim ... You forgot to mention that AMD had "production problems"
with their K6-2 400mhz that required a "mask fix". This diverted resources
from K6-2 450mhz and K6-3 products. Guess AMD didn't have enough process
margin for their 400mhz CPU's ... Who'd ever thunk it ?? <ggg>
