For every seller there is a buyer. I bought your Dell shares two days ago at 107 and change :-) I am not the greatest of market timers, which is why I like to buy and hold, however I agree that it can be an excuse for holding a losing position. I have a few stocks that I roll the dice on, and those I trade in and out of pretty quickly. But on solid companies like AOL, or like the Dell position I initiated, I try to give them some time. My pain threshold is about 10%, though, on new positions. If they go below that, I will sell and buy back in chaper. I am only down 5% on Dell, so have some more to give. On positions that I hold, and that I have a good cushion on, like AOL, it would take a big time market crash for me to sell, since selling and moving back in would kick in tax gains.

Cosmos,

WOW, I never knew someone who could time the market like you. Great call on Dell. Would you please be so kind to tell us where Dell will be tomorrow and also on the 16th and where the market Dow and Nasdaq will be too?? Please enlighten us with your early edition reporting.

Thanks
Frank

Frank,
This day's trading wasn't caused by what was posted on SI, it's the market. Post the name of the brokerage who told you that so we can all roll on the floor laughing. I sold DELL two days ago at 108 1/4 not because of what I read on SI but because the market told me it was coming down. "Long term investor" is an excuse for holding a losing position, suck it up and dump that loser or take a profit and reposition after the pullback. Or you could follow the recommendations of a broker at Merrill Lynch and averge down, NOT.
