Wait! I think I take back my post agreeing that I was wrong in the way I used 'deterrence'! I said that there was no evidence that capital punishment statutes acted to deter crime, but...

And wouldn't that be an effective crime reduction measure by the application of fear? Sort of?

It is true that more cops on the street reduces crime. Maybe some of it is benign influence; but at least some of it must be... deterrence.
