OT - 5X DVD

Tim, I agree with you 99%. I had a similar problem with the first encore 5x i bought, I took it back and noticed that the drive had a different firmware revision. Furthermore, I felt that there was a serious problem with the passthrough also, both of which seem to go away or decrease significantly by swaping out the drive. When I pulled off the origional pass-thru I noticed a couple "burrs" on the vga connector so my perception of the cable was suspect to begin with.

I bought it for the "gadget", and I was building a couple systems at the time. Full screen is relatively good, but nothing compared to a standalone DVD of course. Would I buy again... probably not, does V3 with DVD acceleration sound like a solution... maybe.

One the other hand... there are several software DVD decoders out there that I have not tried that would definately get rid of the passthru cable. BTW.. I also tried the Sony drive with the Realmagic card and I liked the Creative product better.
