Loki:

Before today's happenings, I was trying to work out what the next announcement will be from CPQ. (Let us leave aside AV for the moment).

CPQ seems to have decided to compare itself with IBM rather than with DELL. The two points on which it seems to compete on a PR basis with DELL are (1) That CPQ is No. 1 and (2) the superiority of CPQ's multi-channel sales strategy over DELL's single, direct channel. If you remember that just before DELL's last earnings in November, CPQ mounted a PR campaign to highlight the enhancement of its direct sales channel and made statements about the value of sales through the direct channel; it also trumpeted the initial success of the Presario through the direct channel.

CPQ developed these themes agan two weeks ago at earnings. So perhaps it is too soon to return to the theme. But the last effort in Novemebr was so successful that it may be tempting to do it again. We may get a progress report early next week, and further announcements about Compaq.com and further claims that it is taking market share from DELL through the direct channel.
