Perhaps at the trial he thought they would believe that more readily than his claim of innocence.

It is a matter of record that -- more than once -- people have confessed to crimes under duress, been convicted and sentenced to death. Yet some have lived long enough to prove their innocence. Unfortunately, many others have not.
