The Very Model of a Modern Gentleman nytimes.com This, the dreaded Sidney Blumenthal, "Sid Vicious" around here. Could it be that the Drudge preemptive attack was misplaced? It doesn't sound like there's a lot here to sway anybody, but this is that awful liberal media spin again. On the new information front: White House lawyers, led by Lanny Breuer, objected to the questions delving into the Willey matter. Blumenthal was permitted to answer, but said he knew nothing about Ms. Willey. On the main subject: During the one hour and 15 minutes of the deposition, Blumenthal testified, as he had before the grand jury on three occasions, that in a conversation with the President on Jan. 21, 1998, Clinton said Monica S. Lewinsky had sought an intimate relationship. Blumenthal also testified to the grand jury that Clinton had said Ms. Lewinsky had told him she was known as the Stalker. But Blumenthal said today that he had never repeated that information to reporters, Congressional officials said. And he added that Clinton had never instructed him to spread the story or perpetuate the lie, officials said. "I never leaked any conversations," Blumenthal reportedly said today. "I never spoke to any reporters about any personal conversations with the President about Monica." Asked whether the President had lied about his relationship with Ms. Lewinsky, Blumenthal replied, "Yes," the officials said. And he noted that Clinton had never apologized to him for the lie. It doesn't exactly reflect well on Clinton, but an impeachable offense? Blumenthal is long despised by Republicans as fostering theories that conservatives have engaged in various conspiracies to undermine the President. Think he planted that NYT story on the Paula Jones saga, where much of the material was clearly attributed to Brock and Jones' attorneys of record? No vast conspiracy, just a small circle of friends. Blumenthal has also been accused of masterminding the disclosure last year that Representative Henry J. Hyde had a long adulterous affair nearly 30 years ago. Blumenthal has denied that accusation. But those who expected a partisan combatant today were apparently disappointed. Rogan said, "I found him to be a gentleman, and I hope he felt the same way about us." But his appearance on video will convince all those stupid Democrats to vote to convict, right, JBL? Hope springs eternal. . .
