GENERAL MOTORS CORP said that its estimate for 1Q North American
production remained unchanged at 1.473 mln units. GM's estimated
production is up 98,000 units or 7.1% from actual production of
1.375 mln cars and trucks in North America in the 1Q of 1998. The
world's largest automaker said it expects to manufacture 767,000
cars and 706,000 trucks in the three months from January through
March, up from 673,000 cars and 702,000 trucks in the first
quarter of 1998. For January alone, GM said it produced 240,000
cars and 211,000 trucks for a total of 451,000 units in North
America, up 59,000 units from January, 1998. (Reuters 04:17 PM ET
