Ron, <<Most of all gold trades are done electronically less you forgot.>> I can go and buy physical gold today and throw it in a safe at home. If there truly was a crisis, you know as well as I do, that the "confidence" in currency, you are so fond of telling as about, would all but disappear. At that point, gold would have value as a bartering instrument. I suppose that if society were truly debased to the point where most of the things we take for granted were no longer there, some elements would negotiate with the barrel of a gun - but if that is the direction the world took, then I would just as soon not be around. If Darwinism truly prevailed, the world would likely end up being populated by a bunch of self-centered, war mongering jerks, destined in the long run to ravage each other anyway. Re: confidence - it a very tenuous thing ..... a hell of a thing to structure an economy around .... not much substance to it and it can change at the drop of a hat. I do not buy the "confidence" argument .... sounds like so many of the new business buzz terms thrown about today ... like "right-sizing" and "rationalizing". I have no faith in the US to be the guardian of the world's economy, nor do I want that ..... it is too much responsibility for one country, and certainly not in the best economic interests of the rest of the world .... but perhaps that is what this is really all about. The bottom line as far as I am concerned .... all currencies are doomed to failure sooner or later, because they are subject to manipulation\debasement by governments. Listen to your own president talk about the "surplus" you have down there ..... does that sound like a government you want to trust (or be confident of) ..... when you have a 5+trillion dollar debt? Ron .. lets just agree to disagree ..... I have little faith in governments to manage anything, least of all my financial well being. The issue of gold and what it means to me also gets into other areas, mostly philosophical, potentially nasty, and I would just rather avoid going there. The fact is ... the US may be perceived as the safe haven at the moment ... but sooner or later people will come to realize, that in the scheme of things, it really is no more safe than many other places .... it will just be the last part of the Titanic to go under.
