You may use your monopoly "unfairly" to prohibit others from entering into realistic competition with. Do not confuse the justice department lawyers with sales department "foil flippers". When antitrust lawyers think about competition they mean for major share of dollars in real markets. They don't mean piece count shares either unless that meaningfully translates in dollars. The K7 and K6-3 are probably not competitors since they only pursue a significant share of mind to date. How may Intel "unfairly" act to prohibit AMD from entry. One way is for a monopoly to "sell" below a reasonable and fair value. To sell for a price that is lower due to the presence of a potential competitor than they would have if he were not there. This may be but one kind of test fairness. Selling products for less than the fully burdened cost of producing them is another type of test. I am sure that there are mainly other tests that lawyers may imagine. I do not know of the innocence or guilt of Intel in this matter. It is a matter for discovery of the precise facts, the arguments of lawyers and the justice of judges. If you look around in society you find many apparent inconsistencies about issues. I believe that if pursued they will find that Intel and Microsoft both have one or more monopolies. Whether they have done something wrong is not as clear. However, now is not the wise time for the prudent manager to be bullying the underdog. This why I believe that Intel will probably back off a little. Yes, Elmer I did not sell my AMD and of course I wish that I had sold it all before the conference call. I wish that I had sold all of my Intel at 143 1/2 a few ago. If AMD gets slammed early tomorrow I am going buy some more. Maybe I can sell some next time it gets into the thirties. Otherwise I will wait.

Elmer, it seems obvious that these guys will pull a Clinton this year regarding the K7. If the K7 is successful in taking on Intel's Xeon, these guys will gloat to no end, singing, "Ding, dong, the witch is dead!" If the K7 is a disappointment and fails to make inroads into high-margin Xeon territory, or if Intel successfully responds to the K7 with accelerated Xeon speed ramps and price cuts, these guys will complain that Intel is just being a monopolistic bully. Actually, it's more like a Saddam Hussein than a Clinton. Like I said before, Saddam Hussein before Desert Storm was saying that he has the greatest military in the world, that the U.S. military are a bunch of wimps compared to his Republican Guard. After Desert Storm, Saddam Hussein is sobbing, "Poor us, suffering under the unjust might of American aggression!" Tenchusatsu
