THE HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF DEER VALLEY AIRPORT:

The City of Phoenix acquired Deer Valley Airport in August 1971. Since then, a series of extensive improvements have made Deer Valley one of the finest general aviation airports in the nation.

Deer Valley is classified as a general aviation reliever airport for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. It is traditionally one of the busiest airports in Arizona, averaging 220,000 takeoffs and landings per year. Deer Valley is also home to more than 900 based aircraft.

In 1972, the City bought and operated the airport's first air traffic control tower. The Federal Aviation Administration opened the present tower in 1975, the same year the airport's main terminal was completed.

To keep Deer Valley among the nation's best general aviation airports, the Phoenix City Council adopted the Deer Valley Master Plan in 1986.

The master plan, which charts the airport's future into the next century, calls for airfield improvements to enable Deer Valley to accommodate a large percentage of the nation's general aviation fleet mix.

Lengthening Deer Valley's main runway (7R/25L) was completed in the summer of 1987. The airport's second runway (7L/25R) was lengthened from 3,800 to 4,500 feet in the spring of 1993.

In 1991, 117 T-hangars were added on the northeast side of the airport, and in 1995, 118 additional T-hangars were constructed to accommodate growing demand.

PHOENIX GOODYEAR AIRPORTS: HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT

On July 1, 1968, the City of Phoenix Aviation Department bought and began operating Litchfield Airport. The facility was built in 1943 and was originally operated by the United States Navy. At that time, the field served as a support facility to the adjoining Aircraft Division of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company.

The Navy expanded the airport in 1951 for military aircraft storage. This was the airfield's mission until 1965, when the General Services Administration took over operations, intending to eventually phase out the facility. However, the airport's future was secured when the City of Phoenix bought the facility.

Since obtaining ownership, the Aviation Department has transformed Phoenix Goodyear into a general aviation airport serving the needs of western Maricopa County. The airport is included in the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) National Airport System Integrated Plan and is classified as a reliever airport to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Goodyear is home to more then 175 based aircraft.

The City of Phoenix has made numerous improvements at Phoenix Goodyear, including new T-hangars, ramp space, tie-downs and an upgraded airfield.

The major tenants at Phoenix Goodyear are Airline Training Center of Arizona (ATC), which provides basic flight training for pilots destined for careers with Lufthansa and other air carriers and Dimension Aviation which provides maintenance and modifications to transport aircraft.
