The market for database systems is far from dried up. By some accounts, up to 70% of all corporate data still lives in legacy mainframe systems. Eventually, the business needs for migrating this data to an RDBMS whether for building a data warehouse or just to get rid of the big iron will become compelling.

Upgrades do nothing to Oracle's revenue picture. Current customers with support agreements get the upgrade for free. There generally is some ancillary business generated with an upgrade as users get training (Oracle Education) or hire consultants to help get up to speed with the new feature set.

The internet capabilities in Oracle 8i should get some "non-traditional" customers into the fold. A business that has built its web site using static html pages with no connection to its catalog or inventory data could make great use of a database product that can handle its data processing needs, feed dynamic content to its web site and handle e-commerce. Everyone loves one-stop shopping. Just look at Microsoft <g>. Also, the Raw-Iron initiative gives third party vendors the ability to build turnkey web-enabled business applications and sell them as an appliance. You need a system to run your small business? Buy this box, plug it in, point a browser at it, give it some information about your business and go! It takes shrink-wrapped applications and goes one step further.

Hope this gives you a start on the info you are looking for.
