DJ: IXC Communications To Consider Buyout, Posts Quarterly Loss

AUSTIN, Texas -- IXC Communications Inc., an emerging voice, data and
Internet carrier, said it has retained Morgan Stanley Dean Witter & Co. to
evaluate a possible sale or partnership.
Shares of IXC surged 40% in yesterday's Nasdaq Stock Market trading, closing
up $13.25 at $46.25.
Chairman Ben Scott said IXC is changing from a wholesale to retail
orientation and is looking for a partnership to widen its customer base. Mr.
Scott also contended IXC shares don't reflect the company's substantial
investment in its network.
Observers have long expected a consolidation of the intensely competitive
longdistance market, where many companies have built networks to carry
increasing Internet and data traffic.
The company, which has completed the nation's first coast-to-coast
fiber-optic network, made the disclosure while reporting a fourth-quarter
loss of $26.8 million, or $1.17 a share, compared with a year-earlier loss
of $17.6 million, or 84 cents a share. Revenue increased 3.5% to $169.8
million.
Many credit IXC with finishing its own advanced network before competitors
such as Qwest Communications International Inc. and Level 3 Communications
Inc. But in recent months, Qwest has lined up a number of strategic
partnerships, including Microsoft Corp., and major customers, winning a $1
billion contract from the federal government.
