To answer some of my own questions about zicam sales and PR, I decided to call Brown Russell at GUMM just a few minutes ago. I am reluctant to do this very often as I know they are extremely occupied with other marketing and mfg matters. I was interested in whether there was some big PR items coming out in the very near term(i.e next few days). Answer: No. They have not yet filled the stores nationwide with zicam and believe that it would be "foolish" to market the product to "empty shelves". This happened with Cigarest and wasted millions. The plan is to stock it first and then hit the media-PR blitz. So far, they have gotten the product to the full Albertson's chain where it has done "extremely well" by word-of-mouth and has sold out rapidly in many stores. They are currently shipping to all Eckard's and other chains but have not filled up the channel. As Mr.Bengalus has noted (and I certainly agree), the real test is repeat sales after the first push, including initial PR. If it works half as well as indicated by those who have tried it, I'll stock it for my office staff to use as it would be a HUGE savings in lost time/productivity/billing costs for my firm.
The stockholders meeting will probably be earlier this year than July, spring perhaps. Since Phoenix in July will melt even a shorter's heart, that sounds like a good idea. I'll look forward to seeing some of you folks there. Now,to golf as it's 65F in Atlanta just now.
