Toshiba To Close US Prototype Chip Plant

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Toshiba Corp. (6502) will close a U.S. factory turning out prototype ASIC chips by the end of March, company officials said Friday. Production will be transferred to its Oita, Kyushu plant and Iwate Toshiba Electronics Co., which mass-produce the chips.

The major electric machinery maker aims to cater to client demand to reduce the time from development to output, and expects the integration to cut development costs for advanced chips.

The company will dismiss all 250 employees at Microelectronics Center of Toshiba America Electronic Components Inc. The U.S. sales subsidiary produced prototype application-specified integrated circuit chips for supply to U.S. information/communications equipment makers.

Toshiba expects to post about 30 billion yen in group operating loss from the chip business for the year ending March. It aims to build up its ASIC and chip businesses other than memories, which are sensitive to market conditions.

The global market for ASIC chips, which are used in cellular phones and computers, totaled about 2 trillion yen in 1997.
