(BSNS WIRE) Gateway in Hampton, Virginia Announces Major Expansion Gateway in Hampton, Virginia Announces Major Expansion

Business Editors

NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 5, 1999--

More than 1,000 manufacturing positions expected to be created

New "vendor campus" to bring additional companies
and positions to the area

Gateway (NYSE: GTW) today announced it will expand its Hampton, Va., manufacturing facility in order to increase its computer manufacturing capabilities. Plans include the addition of more than 1,000 new manufacturing employees to be hired during the next three years. Hiring for these new positions is scheduled to begin this summer, when the facility is ready to accommodate additional work shifts.

To facilitate the expansion, Gateway will develop a "vendor campus" that will be occupied by non-manufacturing operations currently located in the Hampton plant. In addition, Gateway vendors and suppliers will be encouraged to locate to the new facility, to be built on a 55-acre campus.

"Demand for Gateway(TM) products and services continues to grow at a rate far above the industry average. To meet this demand, our operations in Hampton must grow as well," said David J. Robino, Gateway's executive vice president and chief administrative officer. "Our expansion plans in Hampton will help us meet the ever-increasing demand for technology and provide the best possible computer solutions to Gateway clients. The positive business climate and high-caliber employees in the area makes Hampton the perfect site for continuing to grow our operations."

The expansion plan consists of two phases:

Gateway plans to add more than 1,000 manufacturing employees at its facility in Hampton in order to increase production at the facility. To accommodate needed space requirements, some non-manufacturing functions, including warehousing and parts distribution, will be moved to a new workspace at a nearby vendor campus location.

The new employees are scheduled to be hired over the course of a three-year period. Approximately 250 to 300 employees are scheduled to be hired in 1999, with the remaining positions planned to be staffed be added this year to staff an off-site facility located on the new vendor campus. Employees at this site will provide logistical support to Gateway's manufacturing operations.

Phase II

Gateway plans to establish a new vendor campus on a 55-acre site adjacent to Big Bethel Road in Hampton. The site will enable gateway's top vendors and suppliers to be near the manufacturing plant. Current plans call for the development of a 250,000 square-foot facility, scheduled for completion this summer.

Gateway will encourage many of its vendors and suppliers to maintain a presence on this campus, which will help the company streamline its manufacturing process. In addition, Gateway will use part of the new facility to house its warehousing, parts fulfillment and other functions that will be relocated from its current facility. Gateway currently employs 2,100 full- and part-time people in Hampton. The Hampton facility began desktop computer production in June 1996. The technical support call center opened in June 1997 and expanded in 1998. In addition, the facility has been recognized as a leader in the Virginia Initiative for Employment not Welfare (VIEW)program.

"Gateway has firmly established itself as one of Virginia's most respected corporate citizens," Governor Gilmore said. "Gateway has proven its commitment to the Commonwealth and the company's expansion will provide new jobs and investment in Hampton."

"We appreciate the support and assistance Gateway received from overnor Gilmore and the City of Hampton as we made this decision,"
added Robino. "We are very pleased to be in Virginia and look forward
to continuing our relationship with the state."
