From "Computer Retail Web" (CompUSA is #1) If this has been posted previously, I apologize. In any case, some here might want to check out Computer Retail Web computerretailweb.com for related information. Article link: computerretailweb.com "CompUSA, www.compUSA.com" "When it comes to merchandising an Internet storefront, stagnation equals death. When we last reviewed CompUSA.com, we praised the site's intuitive search engine and navigation features. In a medium marked by reinvention, CompUSA has kept pace, with a redesigned Web site that features an increased focus on software, including a new section for electronic software delivery. Users can browse CompUSA's software selection by product category, and search for products by vendor. CompUSA.com's software assortment rivals any Internet software retailer, ranging from antivirus utilities to word-processing titles. CompUSA.com mirrors its brick-and-mortar outlets, with an Apple store, hardware and accessories areas, and a CompUSA PC ordering center. Custom configuration of a CompUSA PC is especially easy. Drop-down menus show choices for each component, and the site keeps a running total as the user makes changes. Like other Internet computer-retailing sites, the revamped CompUSA online store adds distinctive elements such as hot deals, "Xtreme buys," clearance items, and a special IBM employee purchasing section. A quick product search field at the top of the screen adds convenience. However, a second "quick navigation" field is redundant, considering the exhaustive list of site features, shopping areas and information located on the left side of the main screen. It's apparent CompUSA.com is allowing room for growth. The latest addition is a "Download Store" that provides instant electronic order fulfillment. The ESD store is hosted by Digital River. A banner heralding the store sits front-and-center on CompUSA's home page. Unfortunately, the CompUSA download store was experiencing technical difficulties when we visited. Clicking on the banner link invoked an "error" response the first few tries, but subsequent attempts were successful. In addition, a Windows CE section offered six vendor choices, one of which was "unassigned." Purchasing and downloading software is slowly gaining momentum in the cyber-marketplace, but the number of titles on CompUSA's site is still fairly limited. That could change quickly, considering Digital River's hefty catalog. In all, CompUSA's remodeled Web store is comprehensive enough to befit its No. 1 rank in CRW's 1998 Top 100 Retailers report.
