(NYSE:MAT - news) will produce action figures of Michael Jordan, one of the greatest players in NBA history. Jordan recently announced his retirement from basketball after playing in the NBA for 13 years. ''Mattel's line of Jordan action figures marks the first time since 1996 that Jordan has been featured in any line of collectible action figures,'' said Bruce Stein, president, Mattel Worldwide, and chief operating officer. As the master toy licensee for the NBA, Mattel has created the only toy lines that incorporate all of the league's authenticity, excitement and action. Jordan, a five-time NBA MVP, two-time Olympic gold medalist and six-time NBA champion, will be replicated in three action figure sizes: 3-1/2, 6 and 13 inches tall. The 3-1/2-inch figure is part of the new NBA JAMS line. The full line of NBA JAMS action figures features action poses and detailed faces of 38 NBA superstars in caricature targeted to children and adults. The NBA Superstars line of 6-inch figures offers the realism of 40 NBA players through sculpted detail and real game poses targeted for serious collectors and children. Jordan also will be featured as a fully articulated 13-inch action figure, complete with his No. 23 Bulls team uniform and displayed in an upscale collector package. The NBA JAMS and NBA Superstars series are scheduled to be available in a limited run for spring 1999. The approximate retail prices for the NBA JAMS and NBA Superstars action figures are $3.49 and $6.99, respectively. The 13-inch Michael Jordan collectible figure is scheduled for release for fall 1999 at an approximate retail price of $29.99.
