2/05/99 - Special Gold Shipments Reduced Decline in Exports Last Year

<Picture>

Feb 05, 1999, (Comline via COMTEX) -- Korea"s general trading companies (GTCs) exported gold worth more than $4.3 billion last year, including $2.1 billion worth accumulated through the nationwide gold-collection campaign in the early part of the year, to substantially help overall exports, trading industry sources reported. For 1998, the nation"s overall merchandise exports totaled $133.2 billion, a 2.2 percent decrease from the year before. However, if the special gold shipments are excluded, the nation"s net merchandise exports last year reached only $128.9 billion. That reveals a 5.4 percent decrease in net exports, more than doubling the 2.2 percent drop, the sources explained. ( The Korea Economic Weekly 1999/02/04 )
