Ken:

When I was about 12, or so, I picked up a copy of Pietro Di Donato's "Christ In Concrete"...one of the most powerful writings I've ever read on the need for unions. But for a more balanced view, I think Dos Passos' "Mid Century" gives a look at both the good and bad of the labor movement.

(I don't like union violence either, but there was a time when it had it's place, and there may come that time again. We never really know, because human beings are still basically the same after all these years, and can easily revert back to former behavior patterns, both on the management and worker side of the equation.)

I'm more concerned with union violence and its threat against workers, both its own members and others. Large scale violence is only likely to result with the acquiescence of government and its agencies, or more likely, their participation. Human nature never changes, (or at least evolves very slowly -g-), which is why the power of institutions, both public and private, must be reliably checked.

Regards, Don
