I have been a long-time Checkfree customer but only recently switched from Quicken direct-connect to BankOne's online service, which, of course, is run by Checkfree.

My initial experience is not so good, however, and I would like to hear from others if this is the norm…

With direct-connect, I was able to pay my bills on the actual due date. All I had to do was transmit my instructions to Checkfree at least 5 business days before the due date. No problem. Over the years, I have generally been pleased with the timeliness of the payments.

Now, with BankOne, I am told I must pay my bills 5 days ahead of the due date. In other words, if the bill is actually due on the 10th, BankOne won't guarantee it's delivery unless I pay on the 5th. Now this is really lame. Why in the world should an electronic transfer take 5 days? Why doesn't BankOne operate in same fashion as Checkfree Direct? Maybe I'm wrong, but it sounds like BankOne just wants 5 days of float, which is bad enough, but even worse is that I don't think this is a good way to attract new customers to online billpay. And as a CKFR shareholder, I'm even more concerned about that.

How do other Checkfree banks handle this? Is this normal? In my opinion, Checkfree Direct has it right…you pay the bill on the due date, period. This, to me, has always been one of the major attractions of online billpay.

Any feedback?
