The last paragraph of M-K pages...... As SANs proliferate, the industry will likely consolidate. The high barriers to entry associated with the development of Fibre Channel products will make the "make" versus "buy" decision an easy one. Look for the best-capitalized companies to buy technology through acquisition as end users begin favoring one-stop shopping. The long-term prospects for storage networks are very promising. IDC believes that 37% of the external data capacity sold in 2002 will be utilized in a SAN, and Forrester Research has found that over two-thirds of data administrators at large companies are considering SAN installations within the next 12 months. Since SANs have the ability to significantly lower the management costs associated with the exploding rate of new data capacity, we believe that this has the potential to be the most significant market opportunity since the onset of client/server computing and will reach a multi-billion dollar value within the next three years. Look for other LAN vendors to join 3COM in attacking the SAN market. ANCR, evade capture as long as possible.
