Yeah, but a billion here, a billion there and pretty soon you're talking about real money. :-)Isn't it interesting that a billion dollars is just not that big a deal anymore? I like the headline, I'm not so sure about the story. I gues I'll just have to go over to the semichips.org website and look at the numbers... +++++++++++++++ Semiconductor Group: 4Q World Chip Sales Rose 10.5% From 3Q Dow Jones Newswires SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Fourth-quarter world semiconductor sales rose 10.5% from the third quarter, according to a semiconductor industry group. In a press release Thursday, the Semiconductor Industry Association said December semiconductor sales fell 1.5% to $11.31 billion from $12.11 billion a year ago. On a sequential basis, the decline narrowed to 0.7%. November semiconductor sales were $11.4 billion. The Semiconductor Industry Association attributed the higher-than-expected increase in fourth-quarter sales to capital spending cutbacks, which helped bring supply in line with demand. The association said Asia-Pacific markets showed signs of recovering and personal computer demand "continued to strengthen, spurred by increasingly affordable prices." December Asia-Pacific sales rose 2.4% from a year ago. "Stabilization bodes well for favorable sales in 1999," said the industry group. European December sales rose 5%, but sales in Japan fell 8.3% and Americas sales fell 4%. December sales tend to be lower due to a shorter work month, the group said. In total, 1998 sales fell 8.4% to $125.61 billion from $137.2 billion in 1997, surpassing projections that year-end figures would fall more than 10%, the group said. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
