I have followed ISI since they went public in 1991. I cannot recall any purchases on the open market by any officers of the company. In particular, I think the purchase of 10,000 shares by Chairman of the Board, Naren Gupta, two weeks ago should be taken as a significant indicator that the tide is turning at ISI. I also have to wonder if it was just a coincidence Gupta's purchase was the same day that WIND fell 17 points. WIND's rate of growth is apparently slowing just as ISI is beginning to ship pRISM+ 2.0. I recently attended a "Real Time" trade show in Santa Clara and was able to speak to both customers and third party tools vendors that work with both WIND and ISI. All of them feel ISI is back on track with both their products and sales force. WIND, while a formidable competitor, will not have the wide open field they have enjoyed the last couple of years with Tornado. Anyone who has followed the industry for a long time know WIND and ISI's growth rate have leapfrogged each a couple of times. WIND had the early lead in the early 90's, ISI roared back with 50% growth in pSOS during 1994 through 1995 based on an upgraded pSOSystem targeting telecom and datacom applications. At the time WIND was floundering and some in the industry even wondered whether WIND would survive. WIND showed several quarters of declining product sales and WIND shares fell to $4 (pre splits) in 1994. WIND came back under Ron Abelman's leadership and Tornado. ISI countered with pRISM but its development, in hindsight, was too ambitious at a time ISI was absorbing five acquisitions and turnover in the management team. But, the acquisitions have given ISI great technology in embedded communications including embedded internet technology (Epilogue), market leading Java, C++ compiler technology (Diab), powerful programming tools (TakeFive), and the leading embedded services group (Dr.Design). Now, ISI has a capable new CEO on board with Chuck Boesenberg. With version 2.0, pRISM+ has now matured. ISI has depth and breadth of leading edge embedded technology for a rapidly growing market. The tide is turning for ISI. ISI is again poised for accelerating growth.
