Ted Turner likes C-Cube chips in HP servers...............

The system currently provides a 4:2:0 MPEG-2 encoding and decoding solution up to 15Mb/s by using the C-Cube MPEG-2 chipset. However, the new encoder and decoder boards are of a modular design, which will allow an upgrade to support 4:2:2 MPEG-2 encoding/decoding once these chipsets become available.

PALO ALTO, Calif. (BUSINESS WIRE) - Hewlett-Packard Company, the industry leader in MPEG compression technology, today announces that Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.'s Turner Entertainment Group has begun using the 4:2:2 capability of HP's MediaStream Broadcast Servers for spot insertions and long-form programming.
Turner Entertainment Group recently upgraded its two existing HP MediaStream Broadcast Servers to 4:2:2 and added an additional server to the company's broadcast system, a predominantly tape- and cart-based environment. Migrating to HP's 4:2:2 solution has given Turner Entertainment Group the ability to use servers to cost-effectively cache spot insertions and long-form programming for three feeds of its Cartoon Network Latin America.

Turner Entertainment Group, which currently uses HP's MediaStream Broadcast Server for three broadcast feeds in Latin America, can add two more channels simply by adding additional storage space and decoders. HP's 4:2:2 implementation enables Turner Entertainment Group to cost-effectively take advantage of the enhanced chroma resolution that enables applications such as Digital TV (DTV) up-conversion and content origination.

Turner Entertainment Group's decision to augment its system with HP's MediaStream Broadcast Server was based on HP's ability to deliver proven on-air 4:2:2 technology and on HP's philosophy of treating its customers as partners.

"We have been extremely impressed with HP's genuine interest in meeting our broadcast needs and business challenges," said Suzanne Donino, senior vice president of network operations for Turner Entertainment Group. "We are very satisfied with the quality of the MediaStream product line and in the level of due diligence HP has undertaken in developing and implementing a 4:2:2 solution that meets our broadcast demands."

Augmenting Use of Cart Machines

While HP's MediaStream Broadcast Servers handle the workload of multiple cart machines, Turner Entertainment Group intends to continue using cart machines in tandem with the server. In fact, Turner Entertainment Group expects HP's MediaStream Broadcast Server to increase the longevity of those machines by reducing wear and tear caused by heavy usage.

"Throughout our relationship with Turner Entertainment Group, we've learned a great deal about its business and broadcast needs," said Greg Hoberg, general manager for HP's Video Communications Division. "HP broadcast servers with 4:2:2 capability will enable Turner Entertainment Group to benefit from enhanced video quality and be better equipped to meet the financial challenges presented by the industrywide migration to digital television."

HP was one of the first companies to ship a field-tested, feature-rich MPEG 4:2:2 solution. HP's technology enables key features such as the ability to trim on any IBF frame, to jog and shuttle, and to play 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 spots back-to-back seamlessly.
