I must have misread a price somewhere. I don't recall
double. My impression is it's the price of the so-called
Ultimate Reference Set (which is what I bought).

I haven't cracked the 99. The 98 (without dictionary and
atlas) is three cds. One is a setup Cd which installs some
indexes that are essential; the other two have some repitition
to avoid swapping CDs during a search (fairly clever implementation,
actually). Upshot is, though, that if you put them on your
hard drive you can eliminate the duplication. I think it totals
out to a bit over a gigabyte.

The 99 edition is supposed to have more multimedia. I'll check
it out in the next few weeks, though I have to truck off
on a business trip in about 10 days and may not get to it.
However, I'm interestd myself, so will try to.

Bargain alert: cheap PCI Matrox boards (online auction, ends tonight)

These are some of the preferred alternative for would-be multi-monitor NTers (who don't want to spring for PCI g200 boards.)
