A story is told, possibly apocryphal, but I suspect true, that, with respect to the federal government forcing integration on Louisiana, Earl Long (Huey's younger brother, who was then governor) said to Leander Perez, the notorious "boss" of Plaquemines Parish, "Well, Leander, what are you gonna do? Now that the feds have got them the ay-tomic bomb."

Many things which are no longer legal were legal then. And many things that were illegal -- and which Americans would have fought bitterly against -- were things like taxes.

KIM, the Boston Tea Party was not an issue about being taxed. It was an issue about being taxed without representation.
