Bob, do you realize that this one of the best posts you have ever made to this thread? You address the moral dilemma from your own perspective and try to deal with the conflicts. And own up to the clashes between the personal and the "belief construct."

I should not have posted my own experience unless I hoped to elicit the same thoughtfulness I hope you are seeking.

I can't square this post with some of the other stuff you have said- but as your posts go, I think that was your best one. I agree with everything you said. But alas, I have no prize to give you.

Bob, I have avoided posting on Feelings for the last week or so pretty much- (maybe a not very commendable reason, but when I begin to feel angry or polarized or there is a lot of negative feelings around, I find it personally unhealthy and head for a book) But when I read this, I had to tell you what an excellent post it was. Had you expressed yourself in that way earlier, I would never have written so confrontationally to you! You have wrestled with your own personal demons on the issue, and that gives far more credence to your thoughts than what had seemed like blind regurgitation of dogma and religion.
I found this especially well put---woman can be victims of the propaganda surrounding the issue that is used to assuage the conscience before and after the procedure. It's the other side of the far right religious propaganda and we do need to remember that there are moral implications to the decision regardless of religious beliefs, and that there will be repercussions in our psyches when we make these decisions, that it's certainly not a casual event, like rinsing with listerine because you ate onions.
Anyway, thank you for your honest and open words.
