Right now, I'm reading a 44 page Morgan Stanley Dean Witter Tech Week report dated January 29, 1999. On page 39-41 is a landscape formatted table with the title Technology Stock Universe: Performance, Valuation, & Financial Statistics. The first section of the table is devoted to Internet & PC Software - Mary Meeker.
It lists the following companies with the following information: Company, Ticker, Rating, Price 1/28/99, Change % (5-day 1996 1997 1998) 1999 YTD, 52-wk Price Range, % Chg. from 52-Wk, Mkt Val, FirstCall Mean EPS for C99 and C00, First Call Mean P/E for C99 and C00, IBES Mean % Growth, 1999 P/E to Growth, LTM Financial Data (Sales, PSR, Op Mrgn), Short Interest (Shares Days to Cover, % of TSO), Fiscal Year ends.
A couple of interesting things.
Mary Meeker is cognizent of this list of stocks: 3DO, @Home, Acclaim Entertainment, Activision, Adobe Systems, Amazon. com, America Online, broadcast.com, CDNow, CheckFree, CNET, Corel, Earthlink, eBay, Electronic Arts, Entrust, E* Trade, Excite, GeoCities, Infoseek, Inktomi, Inprise (Borland), Intuit, Lycos, Microsoft, Mindspring, N2K Inc., Netscape, OnSale, Preview Travel, PSINet, RealNetworks, Symantec, TMP Worldwide, VeriSign, Yahoo!, and Ziff-Davis
Out of this group, I would definitely call CheckFree an internet company instead of a software company.
