DJ: I'm in the industry, and I can tell you that Ampex beat themselves into the ground by not responding to the challenges from the Japanese in both their recording equipment and recording media divisions. They (and 3M) were the best and could have squashed the foreign competition had they been more aggressive and not sat on their historical asses.
3M, after dropping divisions and massive lay-offs did manage to recover. Hopefully, Ampex is now poised to reinvent itself, too.
They were great and could be, again.
I'm still a believer.
