Although I _never_ invest more than I can afford to lose in daytrades, I still get a bit of a thrill when I make a good trade. I imagine such a thrill would be even greater if you just doubled your net worth, for example. (while risking your total net worth, probably on margin) So, right now we have a lot of people who are feeling pretty darn good, since the daytrading/retail/online phenomenon has mainly focused on internut stocks, which have (until recently) been going straight up. When the "big one" finally hits, I can see tens of thousands of investors being wiped out, and job prospects in the psychiatric care field should skyrocket. I'm being serious- Glenn is a wealthy man who runs a couple of jewelry stores, but even I could feel his pain when Amazon stomped all over him. (and anyone using logic to short the 'thing') I've seen 2 stories in mainstream media already about people losing everything- one was a college student who spent his tuition money on net stocks and lost it all, and another one a few days ago of a fellow who mortgaged his home and maxed out his credit cards, and quit his job in order to daytrade fulltime. He was wiped out in just "a few bad trades." Who knows how this will turn out. As it stands now, EVERYONE is playing the market. You can't get a cabride without getting stock tips. I don't even live in silicon valley, but rather the deep south, and I've heard conversations about daytrading technology stocks at least a dozen times in the last 6 months at bars in my area. Astonishing, really. Some person posted about a year ago about a conversation they had on a golf course with a friend who just happened to be a billionaire. The person asked his rich friend: "When will it all end?" The billionaire responded: "When it's taken every last dime from the pockets of even the shoeshine boy." That person deserves a prize. Anyone want to wade back through 50,000 messages and find the username? :-D
