Fifteen years ago, attorney David Boies chewed up a series
of opposing witnesses as he defended CBS against libel
charges brought by Gen. William Westmoreland. So
consistent was Boies, the story goes, that courtroom
regulars began to hum the theme of a hit movie each time
he stood to begin a cross-examination:

''DA-dum . . . DA-dum . . . DA-dum . . . DA-dum.''
