Internet Initiative Japan Inc. and Asia Internet Holding Co., Ltd. Announce Japan and China to be Connected Through A-BoneHum...sounds like some type of merger...up close and personal. TOKYO, Feb. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Asia Internet Holding Co., Ltd. (AIH; headquarters: Tokyo, Japan; president: Koichi Suzuki) and China Telecom (headquarters: Beijing, China; president: Zhang Ligui) reached an agreement on February 11 that will link CHINANET to the A-Bone, the Asian-wide international IP backbone network operated by AIH, with a bandwidth of 2Mbps. Completion of procedures is scheduled for the end of March 1999. CHINANET is the largest of commercial Internet service networks in China that has over ninety percent (90%) share of the domestic market reportedly consisting of approx. 2.1 million users. The current move reflects CHINANET's appreciation on network cooperation with A-Bone network which allows their customers to directly access to other Asian countries, especially Japan. With this latest expansion, A-Bone will tie into networks in 10 countries in the Asia-Pacific region. A-Bone's mission is to join the countries of Asia with high-speed large-capacity lines; in this role as the region's central piece of Internet infrastructure, it is contributing to development and progress in this area of the world by providing ever-faster and more-reliable transmission of data between Asia's countries.
