Neil, didn't SOS just say they don't need FC and switches? But just in case...

They have an interesting storage architecture:

<<StorageSuite systems eschew the use of memory caches in favor of a proprietary memory-mapping scheme to achieve consistent performance on all queries. "We map the whole memory scheme so that we know where every [piece of data] is and we go and get it," says Mike Brazao, VP of systems integration for Storage Computer. When a request comes in--whether or not it's an often-asked query--the system can go directly to the appropriate disk.>>

This may be proprietary, but it is not new. It smells an awful lot like Novell's directory hashing, which vaulted them to the top of PC NOS'performance charts way back when. It's one way to speed up read/write requests.

<<With software, the drives are logically divided into pages, with partitions created by numbers of pages.>>

They do not specify page block sizing, and this may not be the most efficient partitioning of disk space.

Ringing endorsement by Tom Hanks though <g>. Any idea who their switch vendor is?
