My dad graduated from college in 1941 as a reserve officer in the US Army. So as a graduation present he got to tour Europe for several years, courtesy of the 3rd Army. Sicily with Patton, France and Germany with General Patch. He witnessed battleships firing broadsides along the French coast, 1,000 plane flights of B-17s filling the sky on their way into Germany. He was part of an anti-aircraft battalion attached to headquarters. Late in the war they spotted some Luftwaffe planes approaching, and started tracking them with their electric motor driven guns. And they quickly discovered that they couldn't track them, because the planes were too damned fast. The first jets. Gave them a good scare because they couldn't hit them, and the Germans pilots would have been able to bomb and strafe them at will.
