Sonata, Scala Strike Joint Venture for E-commerce

Sonata Software Ltd and Scala Business Solutions N.V have announced the birth of a joint venture called Abisko Development Ltd. The new firm will be registered in the Mediterranean nation of Cyprus where Scala ECE, a subsidiary of Scala Business Solutions N.V. is already registered. B. Ramaswamy (photo), managing director, Sonata Software, says, "The new company has been formed with an objective of developing software products to be marketed by Scala and will look at emerging market opportunities like customization, consulting services and offering solutions in new areas like E-commerce."

The new venture would serve Scala in a multi-pronged manner: India-based resource for product development, availability of large pool of skilled manpower, access to new opportunities, among others. Sonata and Scala started their relationship in 1995 with Sonata being appointed as the exclusive partner in India to market and support 'Scala', the ERP product. Since 1995, Sonata has successfully marketed and implemented Scala in more than 40 organisations in India. In 1997, Sonata and Scala expanded their relationship when Sonata started software development for Scala Business Solutions. The work done included customisation projects for various Scala clients worldwide and successful execution of a pilot project to study the feasibility to develop the business components for Scala.

Ramaswamy says, "The setting up of the new venture proves that India can be used as a resource base for developing software products for the international markets in high-tech areas and doing full cycle development. Abisko will result in a revenue of $3 million in the first year of operations to Sonata". Majority of the development work will be carried out at Sonata's development centre in Bangalore and will involve more than 100 professionals from both Scala and Sonata. The software components to be developed will be used primarily in Scala 5 Global Series e-Solutions, a real-time, Internet-based solution based on popular Microsoft DNA architecture.
