Nancy.... I only read Chris Matthews' column occasionally before this scandal. Then he got his TV show on cnbc and I started paying more attention because hes on early on the west coast.

I recall in the past reading about his taxation strategies and he sounded like a middle of the road liberal on social issues.... he was an advocate of fixing the schools if I recall - typical bay area. But after watching his show, he just doesnt seem like the same guy, he has swung right and to the wrong side of the right even... the family values social engineering people. There have been a few editorial pieces in the Chronicle asking that Matthews be dumped or as a minimum present an alternative pov, since he has changed his stripes and no longer represents the city.

I watch his show fairly regularly now and he has had very few senators, congresspeople etc on from the west coast. Also he routinely uses phrases like "If Clinton gets away with this....." which are pretty loaded.

Ive seen him host Dan Quayle and Ralph Reed and he sucked up to both of them - it was gross - absolutely no counterarguments presented, just a "yup thanks for standing up for truth" from Matthews towards both of them.

A lot of people veer right as they get older and maybe thats what happened to him. Or (more likely) he could be catering to what he believes is a conservative audience on cnbc. The WSJ also falls into this trap. I think these guys need to do some polling to see the political views of their viewers/readers... I suspect their age demographics are much younger and more liberal than they think. Having said all this, Matthews is entertaining to watch imo, kind of like Donaldson is. In contrast to more conventional Tim Russert etc.
