Hi Paul - I understand that Novell signed a contract with ActiveCard last month. Perhaps they plan to incorporate this technology with their "Digital Me" product. Maybe Scott L. can provide us a bit more detail about Novell's plans for Digital Me.... EKS

My understanding of the optimal use of a smartcard with fingerprint recognition would be as a local access enabler. The smarts to recognize the fingerprint would be built into the card. If the owner of the card squeezed it then the card would issue an digital identity code to the network. If someone else squeezes it, nothing gets issued. The digital identity code that gets issued and transmited over the network is not the fingerprint. Here is a simple analogy: smartcard with fingerprint id --- the same thing as those computer keys that you used to find used to secure physical access to the computer. smartcard issued digital identity code --- equivalent to today's login name but encrypted. user verification --- equivalent to today's password but with a digital identity vault you use one such code for many sites.>> Paul: This Digital Me stuff is really exciting. We must take a step with Novell somewhere NOW to get something going. I really want to act on this NOW. I can see applications for traders, brokers, networkers. The securities industry has new trading protocols that would start to look too complex if you started to do a loop and check over to a Digital Me vault that could contain ALL the appropriate clearing, commission and other information needed to settle a trade. Our industry is in the process of trying to load up each trade with a lot of extra baggage in a new digital protocal called Financial Information Exchange (FIX). The problem with FIX is that it assumes only ONE receiver of the trade information. This plays into the "sell side" of the street, limiting a buyside users flexibility to access competing points of liquidity. We are excited about NDS and Digital Me for just this reason. Now if I can only get someone from Novell to contact me about this. Quad, this is starting to get embarrassing. Scott Lemon, can you please help? Does someone inside Novell read these boards. Paul, I'd like to work with you on this stuff. Sharing and being open with these ideas is what the internet is all about. We need to lock and load on something, however. Best.
