I have spent several days now researching the historical accuracy of ArtAlley's post, and I can tell you this: it provides genuine and accurate information. The BC/AD switch was accomplished by the great Roman Statesman Gatus Microsoftus. The distinction wasn't widely known to the peasantry, however, until several late Roman banks started distributing Gregorian calendars to encourage deposits. Long term savers were encouraged to open up an "AD CD", and in this way the AD switch became widely known. Hope this historical detail helps.
