that makes sense, i think what my strategy will be going forward is to never open a position into margin. if the stock falls after i buy so i end up being in a margined position, so be it. As long as i limit my down side exposure this should not cause me to have a margin call.

This is a little overkill, I think. Using margin intelligently really amplifies your capabilities. Just keep your safety margin commensurate with the volatility of the stocks you trade. I don't trade the wild Internut stocks, so I feel comfortable using about 150% of my equity.
