OT-Hello, James Nickel Dr Louis Elsas, Professor of Pediatrics and Genetics at Emory Univ testified 11/3/87 to a Congressional committee: "Aspartame is a well known neurotoxin and teratogen [causes birth defects] which in some as yet undefined dose will ... irreversibly in the developing child or fetal brain produce adverse effects."
In my hand is FDA Senior Science Advisor Adrian Gross' 11/3/87 eleven page letter to Sen. Metzenbaum, describing brain tumors in rats fed aspartame. Gross calls the statistical incidence as "nothing short of astronomically high significance ... we are dealing with a huge time bomb ... the human consumption of aspartame is alarmingly dangerous in that it involves an extremely high and therefore totally unacceptable upper limit on the risk for those consuming aspartame: between 1 in 1,000 and 5 in 1,000 to develop brain tumors."

Chicago defense attorneys, Sidney & Austin, hired the prosecution team and the case died from statute-of-limitations expiration. A. H. Hayes, the FDA Comissioner who approved aspartame over the objections of a Public Board of Inquiry then hired on with NutraSweet's public relations agency, Bursten Marsteller while under investigation for conflict of interests, payola, he took a 10 year contract as a "consultant." Consultant's don't show up for work, they just answer phone calls "How's the weather down there in Bermuda, Artie?"
