Mark,
<<I'm not a good investor, because I have not really seen double or triple returns. >>
Yikes. If the definition of "good investor" is double or triple returns in, what, 6 months then we are truly in a period of irrational exhuberance.
<<I've failed to buy the obvious choices; Cisco, Microsoft, EMC, Sun, etc and have continued to hold and follow supporting companies >>
We live in a superstar society. Wall Street is not much different than Madison Square Garden. We pay big bucks to watch Wayne Gretzky. We run to the concession stand for a beer when the checking line is on the ice. Even though the supporting players are vital to the performance of the superstar, we will never give them the attention, or in the case of stocks, the multiple they deserve ( Unless, of course, they break out of the supporting role and begin to dominate the league/market). Superstars dominate. Dominance is valued in our society.
<<Is there true safety in these stocks? >>
Do you expect "true safety" in any stock? I hear Treasuries are yielding 5.20% <g>.

You could have been mindlessly drinking Margaritas on the beach with no fear that these sterling investments wouldn't continue to double every year (except the good years when they triple).
